One Boy

After lunch today, Rafael went inside our room and lied down the bed.  It was an uncommon scene because most of the time Rafael would still be watching cartoons in that time of the day and will refuse when asked to take his afternoon nap.  But this time he probably was too tired from school and felt sleepy already.  So of course, here's mommy to the rescue, carried him up and again found myself singing him my lullaby which was "One Boy".  I then remember the CD with that record.  Daddy bought it several years ago and was kept in our old cd rack. Tried looking for it but I found nothing. In dismay I just searched the song in you tube and found great videos.  It was only  today that I found out that this song was originally sang by Ann Margret on during the 50's then it was also performed by the Bye Bye Birdie in the musicals.  Click here and here to see the videos I found in you tube.

I first heard of the "One Boy" song when I was just 11 years old.  My daddy brought home some cds of collections of love songs and I fell in love the first time I heard of it.  I even remember day dreaming with my crush while listening to that CD when I was young.  When Rafael was born, I used this song as my lullaby and it always works because it brings him to sleep right away.  Here's the lyrics in case you want to enjoy the song as well :)

One Boy

One boy
One special boy
One boy to go with
And talk with
And walk with
Kim and Girls:
One boy
That's the way it should be
Yeah, yeah!
That's the way it should be
One boy
One certain boy
One boy to laugh with
To jump with
Have Coke with
One boy
Not two or three
Kim:
One day you'll find out
This is what life is all about
You'll need someone who
Is living just for you
Kim and Girls:
One boy
One steady boy
One boy to be with
Forever and ever
One boy
That's the way it should be
That's the way it should be
That's the way it should be

Rosie
When will he find out
This is what life is all about?
Will he ever see
I need him and he needs me?
One guy
One special guy
One guy to live for
To care for, be there for
One guy
That's the way it should be,
That's the way it should be

Pom Pom Flowers

I was fixing my cabinets yesterday when I found a bunch of different colors of yarns in the corner. I don't want to throw them away but I don't like them seeing scattered around either.  I searched for projects related to yarns and I found the pom pom flower tutorial.  There were several methods how to make them including the donut card board method but the pom pom tutorial  I found in Bella Dia is more easier for me.  It only took me 30 minutes to make a bud of pom pom flower.  Never thought that I can still recycle my yarn scraps into something really lovely.  It's so easy! Here's how to make them.

You will need:

yarn
sharp scissors
glue gun & glue sticks
materials for stems ( branches or twigs, fabric covered flower wire)

Use your thumb to hold the yarn against your three fingers then start wrapping it with yarn.  Remember not to wrap them to tightly so that you can easily slip them off your fingers later.

The more you wrap your fingers with yarn the more fuller your pom pom will look.  But it still depends with the yarn's thickness.  For my pom poms I used 2 kinds of thickness.  I wrap it for 80 time using the thick yarn and 150 times for the thin one.

After wrapping,  slide it off your fingers.  Be careful not to deform the yarn ball you've made.

Then, cut another yarn about 12 inches long to use it as a tie.  Put the string in the middle of the yarn wrap it around and begin a knot.  Pull it tightly then finish the knot.

Using a sharp scissors, cut the yarn loops the entire way around.

You will be left with a rugged looking pom pom after cutting all the loops.

Trim the long strands of yarn until you get a smooth finish.  Fluffy!

Fire up your glue gun then put a small amount of glue in the edge of your twig then press it to your pom pom.

Ta da'! A pom pom flower!

Here's more.

Active Fun's Spooktacular Halloween 2009

Booo! Halloween here in the Philippines isn't just a one day holiday anymore.  Lots of parties to choose from especially for the kids like my Rafael.  Yesterday was the only day off I have this week that's why I had to choose the perfect event for him.  First choice was supposed to be the Enchanting Halloween in Dusit Thani Manila in Makati.  But the weather yesterday was a bit gloomy plus we had to be home early because we still need to drop by the cemetery. So since a friend of mine suggested the Spooktacular event of Active Fun, I decided to bring my little boy in Fun Ranch yesterday afternoon.  I met up with Suzanne with her all geared up kids Gelo and Gwen at Westgate Alabang and I was so happy to see her  again and was so impressed with  her kid's costumes who are both joining the contest.  Too bad we didn't make it to the registration of the costume contest.  With Rafa's knight costume he could have won in the "Little Prince" category.  But I still had no regrets because we took home a bag of goodies and other loot bags.  There was a magic show that all the kids totally enjoyed.  There were also lots of parlor games with cool prizes that Rafael and I participated.  The raffle prizes were buffet for two at InterContinental Hotel which Gelo won, Bert Lozada P3,000 worth of GC, Active Fun GCs and many more.  All for just P500 registration fee for non member and P450 for all members.  Impressed with the party they prepared for all the spooky kids, I decided to sign up for a 1 year membership for my boy with Active Fun.  Comes with a coupon booklet with freebies and a little clown doll for only P500.  I am looking forward for a fun and lots of event for Rafael this year in Fun Ranch :)

Halloween Fun

 busy decorating Halloween

so happy with his spooky decors

gluing all the paper strips to the balloon

 almost done!

placing all those creepy looking spiders

Spider Hatchlings hanging in the porch ceiling

As I've mentioned earlier on my previous entry, Rafael and I have been having some Halloween fun around here at home.  Rafael took part in all the projects we did and I just assisted him and did the difficult parts.  I can see the potential of an artist in him (just like me! lol!). I'm so happy to watch him enjoying the crafts he did.  Thanks to disney's site for providing me the Halloween crafts ideas for this year.  I thought I would share some of my favorites while you still have time to make them.

1. Spider Hatchlings - Rafael totally had fun gluing all the strips around the balloon.  I never thought we will
come up with something like that.  The spiders look so creepy especially after hanging
                                  it in the porch ceiling.

2. Egg Carton Spiders -   I revised this project .  I can't find any black pipe cleaners that's why I ended up
using different colors instead.  I also asked Rafa to color our cartons with any colors
he wanted. The spiders didn't look creepy at all but they all look fun!

Mommy's First Knight

I promised Rafael to make his Halloween experience this year as memorable one.  Unlike last year, I already tried planning his activities and even included spooky projects that we already did.  As much as I wanted to make a DIY costume for him,  I did not.  I'm already working right now and I just don't have the time to make outfits for him anymore.   That's why when Rafael and I had the chance to drop by the toy store last week, we already grabbed one.  We were originally looking for a Peter Pan costume but we eneded up choosing the Knight.  He watched Peter Pan the movie a couple days ago and told me that he wanted to be Peter Pan on Halloween.  However we weren't lucky enough and only found infant sized apparel.  Oh well, he seemd to enjoy it including the sword I got for him.  Here are some photos of mommy's first knight:

courageous warrior indeed

Looking forward for a fun and  delightful trick or treating this year!

Ukay Finds

It's been awhile again since I last updated this blog.  My work is taking so much of my time plus I planned few halloween projects for my 3 year old son.  But I can't wait to share with you about the bargain shopping I did few days ago.

I've been a fan of ukay ukay stores since these thrift shops became a fad here in the Philippines.  Who doesn't like to go shopping for an endless variety of styles without having any guilt in paying for your shopping bags.  Buying dozens of clothes or bags could not even make a dent in my wallet.  Believe me I have a dozens of bags in my closet that you'll surely love that only cost P100 - P200 bucks each.  I just hope I'll have the time to post them here and share with you my fascination over my ukay finds.  But as I've said let me share with you some of the stuffs I bumped into.

On our way home, my brother asked my dad to drop by at another Japanese thrift shop which sells furniture and toys.  And boy oh boy there were a lot of toys.  If only we had more time, I will surely go home with another ukay shopping bag.  But since we were in a hurry, I just grabbed few items that perfectly fit this Halloween season.

There you go! Prices are real shockers huh!  Can't wait to make another ukay run and share with you my finds...

For The One Great Man In My Life

Daddy celebrated his 53rd birthday yesterday.  (Sorry for announcing it here dad, for my blog's sake. Lol!)  It's hard to describe how happy he was as my family and few relatives had dinner  here at home to celebrate his special day.  Spending occasions with my father rarely happens.  His job hindered us to celebrate Christmas and New Year together for the past few years now that's why the simple party held last night will surely be a memorable one for all of us.

I considered dad the great man in my life. He's been my strength for so many times and I just know he will always be.  From all the failures I had in my journey he was always there.  He never rejected me but instead helped me attain the wonderful life I have right now.  My dad has given me the gift of a father.  Something he unfortunately didn't have the gift of receiving himself as a young boy or even so much on into his adult years. My grandfather died when he was just 3.  However that didn't stop him from being a good dad to us.  He knows exactly how to build a family.  He may not be around for so long, but he makes sure that he spends his time with us whenever he's here.  He has no vices, no barkada and was never an extravagant.  I thank him for that, because right now I am being a good mother to Rafael with his guidance and encouragement.
