Rafael First Hospital Experience

Just recently, Rafa's pediatrician diagnosed him with an acute asthma.  I felt guilty because I knew he got it from me.  I was hoping before that he will grow without it because I know how difficult it is to grow up as an asthmatic child.  I've been through a lot of hardships during my younger years and that includes missing a class field trip when I was in grade 3 and not being able to take a practical exams in physical education when I was in first year high school.

The other night, my parents and I brought my son here at the Hospital of Infant Jesus (where I am currently an employee)  We had to because he was already weak looking and had few episodes of vomiting early that day.  He refused to eat and drink his milk worried that he might cough again.  He had lots of secretions that caused him difficulty of breathing as well not to mention the allergies showing up on both his upper and lower extremities.  That afternoon I already gave him expectorant medication and the usual nebulization were also administered.  However, the dehydration made us decide to travel from Cavite to Manila to seek medical help.

We arrived ER around 10:35pm of November 16.  A doctor checked him right away and was pretty convinced that he needs to be admitted.  I was impressed when IV was inserted to Rafael.  He cried, but he stopped right away.  I was thankful a good vein was found even if the ER nurse had a hard time looking for one because Rafa's a little chubby :)  The doctor admitted Rafael with a suspicion of UTI and to check if the vomiting might lead to diarrhea.  But the main diagnosis was bronchial asthma wherein the secretions causes him to puke.  Well, it was still a relief that it wasn't dengue.  There are lots of dengue cases right now and being aware of the disease I was really praying last night that Rafael doesn't have it.

Rafael was already tired and sleepy when we got here in our room. And even if he still refused to drink or eat anything, I was still relieved because he was already receiving iv fluids.  He was given antibiotics thru iv and expectorant Cheryl IP since yesterday.  He's also taking nebulization every 6 hours and was given hydrocortisone for his itchy rashes.

Rafa's hand is all bandaged up to keep the iv in place, but just this afternoon, Rafael received the last bottle of IV was given  changed his line into heparinized needle for his iv antibiotics.  Today, his second day here in the hospital was totally different from that night of his admissions.  He's back messing up our things and is even jumping on his bed.  I am really happy not seeing him restless and instead a jolly smiling face Rafa.  He's eating with his usual good appetite and drinking lots of fluids.  Though he still needs to be monitored due to the wheezes and crackles breath sounds he has I am confident that we will be discharged tomorrow.

Luis was worried that he was calling us every now and then.  I even decided to buy the Smart Bro wireless broadband so that I can go online and show him Rafael in the webcam.  Really wish that Luis is already here and be with us at this very moment.

So far, everyone is really happy to know that Rafael is doing fine.  All he needs is to deal with the few more doses left of the Penicillin.  He's not impressed by iv injections at all and I think he's already traumatized.  My poor baby :(  I hope this first hospital experience of his will end here, no more hospitalization in the future! All of us at home including his daddy are already looking forward seeing him mess up the house again! Get well soon our dear Rafael!  We love you and miss you!

One Boy

After lunch today, Rafael went inside our room and lied down the bed.  It was an uncommon scene because most of the time Rafael would still be watching cartoons in that time of the day and will refuse when asked to take his afternoon nap.  But this time he probably was too tired from school and felt sleepy already.  So of course, here's mommy to the rescue, carried him up and again found myself singing him my lullaby which was "One Boy".  I then remember the CD with that record.  Daddy bought it several years ago and was kept in our old cd rack. Tried looking for it but I found nothing. In dismay I just searched the song in you tube and found great videos.  It was only  today that I found out that this song was originally sang by Ann Margret on during the 50's then it was also performed by the Bye Bye Birdie in the musicals.  Click here and here to see the videos I found in you tube.

I first heard of the "One Boy" song when I was just 11 years old.  My daddy brought home some cds of collections of love songs and I fell in love the first time I heard of it.  I even remember day dreaming with my crush while listening to that CD when I was young.  When Rafael was born, I used this song as my lullaby and it always works because it brings him to sleep right away.  Here's the lyrics in case you want to enjoy the song as well :)

One Boy

One boy
One special boy
One boy to go with
And talk with
And walk with
Kim and Girls:
One boy
That's the way it should be
Yeah, yeah!
That's the way it should be
One boy
One certain boy
One boy to laugh with
To jump with
Have Coke with
One boy
Not two or three
Kim:
One day you'll find out
This is what life is all about
You'll need someone who
Is living just for you
Kim and Girls:
One boy
One steady boy
One boy to be with
Forever and ever
One boy
That's the way it should be
That's the way it should be
That's the way it should be

Rosie
When will he find out
This is what life is all about?
Will he ever see
I need him and he needs me?
One guy
One special guy
One guy to live for
To care for, be there for
One guy
That's the way it should be,
That's the way it should be

Ann Margret

Pom Pom Flowers

I was fixing my cabinets yesterday when I found a bunch of different colors of yarns in the corner. I don't want to throw them away but I don't like them seeing scattered around either.  I searched for projects related to yarns and I found the pom pom flower tutorial.  There were several methods how to make them including the donut card board method but the pom pom tutorial  I found in Bella Dia is more easier for me.  It only took me 30 minutes to make a bud of pom pom flower.  Never thought that I can still recycle my yarn scraps into something really lovely.  It's so easy! Here's how to make them.

You will need:

yarn
sharp scissors
glue gun & glue sticks
materials for stems ( branches or twigs, fabric covered flower wire)

Use your thumb to hold the yarn against your three fingers then start wrapping it with yarn.  Remember not to wrap them to tightly so that you can easily slip them off your fingers later.

The more you wrap your fingers with yarn the more fuller your pom pom will look.  But it still depends with the yarn's thickness.  For my pom poms I used 2 kinds of thickness.  I wrap it for 80 time using the thick yarn and 150 times for the thin one.

After wrapping,  slide it off your fingers.  Be careful not to deform the yarn ball you've made.

Then, cut another yarn about 12 inches long to use it as a tie.  Put the string in the middle of the yarn wrap it around and begin a knot.  Pull it tightly then finish the knot.

Using a sharp scissors, cut the yarn loops the entire way around.

You will be left with a rugged looking pom pom after cutting all the loops.

Trim the long strands of yarn until you get a smooth finish.  Fluffy!

Fire up your glue gun then put a small amount of glue in the edge of your twig then press it to your pom pom.

Ta da'! A pom pom flower!

Here's more.
